WANDERING GLIDER (Pantala flavescens)
This has the distinction of being one of most widespread dragonflies on the planet, and I love their colouring. If you see them in a large group—hovering and gliding—get your umbrella, as they are normally a good indication of rain to come.
SEE THEM In large groups above marshy areas, especially before and after typhoons. Look for them in particular during the low pressure systems at the end of August and early September....sometimes you can see hundreds over the tops of trees or above other areas. This species is migratory, moving in-front of tropical storms, so after the heavy rain the dragonflies lay their eggs in the temporary pools that are formed. The larvae can develop quite quickly, over a couple of months.
