Taxonomy
- Family: Demodicidae.
- Genus: Demodex.
Distribution
- Demodicosis Skin: demodectic mange caused by Demodex canis is the 6th most common skin disease in dogs in the USA.
- Demodex cornei spp is reported concurrent with D. canis - likely because it is a morphological variant of D. canis rather than a distinct species (Sastre et al, 2012).
- D. injai is an uncommon finding.
Significance
- Probably 100% of dogs are infected with small numbers of Demodex mites but the majority remain asymptomatic.
