Livistona Chinensis CHINESE FAN PALM
Considered an invasive species in south Florida and in the Caribbean, the Livistona chinensis is an ornamental palm in parks and gardens in temperate climates worldwide. This native of east Asia, Japan, Taiwan, and various islands of the South China Sea is a medium sized palm reaching heights of up to 50 feet. The genus Livistona is named for the Baron of Livingston, Patrick Murray (1632-1671) by Robert Brown in 1810. There are thirty-six recognized species within the Livistona genus. Today, having mature Chinese fan palms flourishing in a City of San Diego park is a benefit indeed. Presidio Park's specimens exist in only a small geographic location on the west side of an east facing slope of Palm Canyon. |
