Distribution: from the Red Sea and Eastern Africa to Japan, Hawaii, Marquesas and Rapa. One of the most distributed and common butterflyfish, easy to spot when snorkeling the Indo-Pacific.

Red Sea population lacks the black eyespot on the dorsal fin.
