Distribution: Tropical Atlantic Ocean, from Florida and the Gulf of Mexico to Brazil, and from Mauritania to South Africa.

Replaced by the closely related Aetobatus ocellatus in the Indo-Pacific (including the Red Sea) and Aetobatus laticeps in Eastern Pacific.
