Western Atlantic: Maryland in the USA, Bermuda and Bahamas to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, including the West Indies; absent in the northern Gulf of Mexico.
Inhabits coral reefs
Feeds on benthic plants and small organisms in the sand
Reports of ciguatera poisoning exist.
