Myripristis adusta, also known as Shadowfin soldierfish is found along the whole coast of East-Africa. From Somalia south to Kenya and Mozambique down to South Africa (country) east from Comores to Seychelles and south to Madagascar, Mauritius and Reunion.

Myripristis adustas body-color is mainly a pale salmon pink with edges of scales dorsally on body deep blue to black; median fins with broad black outer border. The inner pectoral fin axil naked except for one moderate scales on lower half.

The Shadowfin soldierfish usually inhabits coral-rich areas of drop-offs and steep channel slopes from below the effects of surge to over 25 m. Occurs singly or in small groups, sometimes with other species.

Myripristis adusta is a nocturnal species hiding in caves or beneath ledges by day, feeds on plankton such as crab larvae at night.
