Info
Halimeda is a genus of green algae with calcified, often disc-shaped segments. It is mainly found in warm seas. There, the limestone sediments produced by Halimeda contribute to reef formation.
The segmented green algae of many species of the genus Halimeda are widespread in shallow tropical waters, including reef flats and sandy bottoms, rocky coasts, mangroves, etc.
Halimeda distorta often grows hanging on rocky walls and ceilings of small caves on lagoons and offshore reefs. The Halimeda algae grows on Halimeda distorta is not cultivated.
Thallus is green to pale green (dry gray to cream). Branching dichotomous or trichotomous, with successive segments usually not aligned. Segments heavily calcified, kidney-shaped to subcircular, occasionally trilobed or with serrated margins, 8–12 mm long and 9–15 mm wide, often distinctly curved, with central and radiating ridges often prominent in dried material.
