The Indo-Pacific genus Metopograpsus belongs to the family Grapsidae. They are intertidal crabs that inhabit sheltered rocky shores and mangrove forests. All species feed opportunistically.
The original distribution area of Metopograpsus oceanicus extended from East Africa to the Philippines until 1960, then to Palua in 1989, Guam in 1997 and to Hawaii in 2006. Metopograpsus oceanicus was probably introduced to both the Hawaiian Islands and Guam through shipping.
Metopograpsus oceanicus tends to be darker than Metopograpsus messor. The crab is mottled in colors of black, brown and light brown. The scissor arms are purple.
