Info

Halimeda scabra M.A.Howe, 1905

Halimeda is a genus of seaweed-forming green algae with a pearl-like thallus made of calcified, disc-shaped segments. It is mainly found in warm seas. There, the limestone sediments produced by Halimeda contribute significantly to reef formation.

Halimeda scabra is usually dark green, fades to a yellowish green when dried, is heavily calcified and is often rough to the touch. The green algae grows upright and forms tufts of 6–9 cm. However, it sometimes grows up to 25 cm long and then no longer grows upright but lies between other algae. The thalli grow branched and crowded, rarely sparse. The individual segments are flat, usually disc-shaped, occasionally differently shaped and are 4-14 mm wide and 0.6-1.5 mm thick.

The algae grows on rocky soil or at the base of sponges from the low tide mark to a depth of 1.5-3m.

In parts of the range there are two distinct seasons: a dry season from November to May with average seawater temperatures of ∼24 ◦C and a rainy season from June to October with averages of ∼30 ◦C and extreme values of 33 ◦C, which is the mean of the annual seawater temperature ∼28 ◦C .
