Alpheus bellimanus Lockington, 1877
Alpheidae also known as pistol crabs, are a species-rich family of the Caridea (shrimp). They are widespread in the tropics and subtropics, and many species live in coral reefs, some also brackish water or even fresh water. They are also poor swimmers. Some of this family live in symbiosis with gobies and sea anemones, and a few even with sea cucumbers.
The color of the body of Alpheus bellimanus ranges from maroon to rich scarlet. The large scissors have yellow and brown spots, the fingers have white tips. The small scissors are orange. Hind legs are lightly banded with red and orange. The North-East Pacific poplar crayfish can be found between rocks, calcareous algae or seaweed beds from the low intertidal zone up to 300m.
The type locality used to describe the species is San Diego, California.
Bottom substrate
So that the crayfish can also build a suitable cave, there should be enough coral rubble of 2 - 5 cm in size. The height of the substrate must be at least 3 - 4 cm in some places (6 cm would be optimal) so that a correspondingly large cave can be built, depending on the association partner.
