The grouper Epinephelus bontoides lives hidden in protected reefs over mud, rock and coral bottoms.

The perch can be recognized by its pale gray coloration with reddish to brown spots.

Epinephelus bontoides appears to be one of the rarest groupers in the Indo-Pacific region, and very little has been published on its biology.#
