Chaetodon flavirostris also known as Dusky Butterflyfish or Black Butterflyfish is recorded from much of the South-western Pacific.
Chaetodon flavirostris shows a dark, almost black background color, with a yellow-orange rim on the dorsal, caudal and pelvic fins. Its snout is yellow, with a white tip and a black spot on its forehead.
The Dusky Butterflyfish can be found in coral-rich and algae covered rocky areas, in lagoons and seaward reefs, including estuarine areas.
Chaetodon flavirostris is omnivorous, and feeds on algae, corals and small invertebrates. It's oviparous, and forms pairs during breeding. Adults are usually seen in pairs, but juveniles tend to be solitary.
Remarks:
Butterflyfish are not recommended for reefs as they will pick at or eat a wide variety of corals, fan worms, and other invertebrates. Most Butterflyfish are known to pick at Aiptaisia, a parasitic anemone.
