Parupeneus chrysopleuron lives on sandy-muddy open substrates and may be restricted to deep water in most of Indonesia, but may occur in estuaries.

Single yellow stripe extends from eye to tip of caudal base, mullet has clear fins and uniform pink body above lateral line, paler color on ventral side.

Similar species:
Mulloidichthys vanicolensis (Valenciennes, 1831) has yellow fins, Mulloidichthys flavolineatus has a black spot on the side of the body.
