A large, evergreen shrub or small tree that is originally native to southeastern China between 700 and 2000 m, but has been cultivated in Japan for more than 1000 years and elsewhere in warm temperate climates since its more recent introduction. It is popular for its tasty, abricot-like fruits but also makes a great ornamental with large, dark green leaves that are pale wooly underneath. The small, white flowers are sweetly scented. Despite its rather tropical look it is quite hardy to cold and suitable to USDA Zones 7 to 11. It is very easy and rewarding to grow. Propagation from the large seeds is quick and fruit quality of seedling plants is equivalent to the parents, but grafted plants produce a sizeable harvest more quickly.
