Description:
Release of an egg-sperm bundle by an Acropora sarmentosa polyp.
Each November, the corals of the Great Barrier Reef are reproducing in a single event by releasing egg-sperm bundles through the mouth of their polyps. These bundles float to the water surface where they break apart to release the encapsulated eggs & sperm, which mix with other gametes. Consequently, fertilization takes place and larvae develop, which eventually attach to the reef to form new coral colonies.
