The Blue Velvet Angelfish now *officially* described as Centropyge deborae | Reef Builders | The Reef and Saltwater Aquarium Blog
Centropyge deborae is a new species of pygmy Angelfish.
Centropyge deborae is the official name of the weird dark blue pygmy angelfish that is so far only known from one location in Fiji. For a while it was believed that Centropyge deborae was merely a localized variant of the midnight angelfish, Centropyge nox, which is all black in coloration. Although morphology was used to differentiate Centropyge deborae from related species, genetic analysis was the primary tool for elevating the Blue Velvet angelfish to full species status Reptiles, Ocean Life, Species, Mammals

This is one of the only Centropyge angelfish in the world that was hybridized in captivity. It is a cross between the Resplendent Pygmy (C. resplendens) Angel from Ascension Island and the Cherubfish (C. argi) from the Caribbean. An extremely limited quantity of this captive bred and raised angel are here at QM. They are now about 200 days old, and 1″-2″ in length. They are eating small spectrum pellets. We are going to auction these off to help support the facility that raised them. Animal Kingdom, Snorkeling

Very rare angelfish. The resplendent angelfish can only be found living in the waters of Ascencion Island, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. This extremely rare dwarf marine fish was once widely available in the aquarium trade for modest prices but they are now nearly absent in the hobby. In his video Jim further discusses the history of the Resplendent angelfish and he shares with us the details of how he came to aquire this ultimate rare fish. The Resplendent Cherubfish is a naturally impossible hybrid crossing of the mid-Atlantic resplendent angelfish, Centropyge resplendens, and the Caribbean cherub or pygmy angelfish, Centropyge argi. This new captive breeding handywork belongs to none other than the Xyphipops experts at Reef Culture Technologies. The joculator angelfish, Centropyge joculator, is one of the rarest pygmy angelfish in the aquarium trade which is actually available, albeit ever so infrequently. It’s been quite a while since some fresh joculators entered the trade and a fresh batch of about two dozen “Jocks” has landed in the heartland of America to satisfy the domestic demand for the bicolor angelfish doppelganger. The joculator pygmy angelfish were imported by Global Reef Supply with an even distribution of juvenile, adole

For some reason anytime we see a picture of a ‘blackened’ yellow angelfish it is always the fuzziest, out of focus or mediocre looking specimen but new pics from Jimmy Ma are a complete exception. This large showy male Centropyge heraldi collected in Cebu has perhaps the best distribution of black we’ve ever seen on a nice yellow angelfish. A little black brow coupled by black accents in the soft parts of the dorsal and anal fins really makes the yellow pop, not to mention the attractive red spo Exotic Fish, Fish, Fish Pet, Fish Keeping, Fish Breeding, Coral Fish, Butterfly Fish

Centropyge interrupta is perhaps the poster child for rare dwarf angels, easily recognized by aquarist world wide. There’s nothing quite like the sparkly blue spots against the intense orange body that all life stages of this dwarf angelfish possess, but its only in the juvenile form, that its most easily observed and appreciated. BlueHarbor just scored two luxurious juveniles and wasted no time in photographing and cementing their beauty in digital form with a video update. The interrupta angel Baby Fish

The photograph of this tigertail coral beauty angelfish didn’t come easy as the Centropyge bispinosa from Mauritius was an active fish. Thankfully, this coral beauty was a large and resplendent specimen with an amazing coloration that was well worth the effort to photograph. This awesome tigertail coral beauty spotted at the House of Fins SPLASH event this weekend is a very unique morph that only occurs at the very edge of the natural range for this popular aquarium fish species. Don’t go getting any grand plans for demanding a tigertail coral beauty at any old LFS though because this morph is very rare in the aquarium hobby, and if it does start popping up here and there you can expect to pay a significant premium over some of the more commonly available coral beauty angelfish. The super rare hybrid of Centropyge multicolor and C. ferrugata shown above unfortunately belongs to the former, and is currently the second piece caught and photographed, this time by Extreme Corals of Germany. What makes this hybrid so special despite its obvious genetics is the location in which it was caught. This odd-colored Potter’s Angelfish, Centropyge potteri, was recently captured by Pacific Tropics in Hawaii. The Potters Angelfish is one of the Centropyge species which can show a great deal of variability in it’s color pattern, and Dave Kelly was lucky enough to spot and capture the xanthic potter’s angelfish at a depth of eighty feet.
