BROWN SURGEONFISH or LAVENDER TANG
ma'i'i'i Naganiza
Abundant on shallow reefs exposed to surge where it feeds upon filamentous algae. An aggressive territorial species that may join mixed-species aggregations to feed. Base color varies from gray to dark brown with orange dots on the face and purple fins, with a pair of black spots at the posterior base of the dorsal and anal fins. Attains 8 inches.
