Rare at Midway and Kure Atoll in
caverns at scuba depths but not yet reported from the other Hawaiian
Islands. It is common in other parts of its range. Large scaled,
red with a silvery background, spiny
dorsal fin pale with the outer half bright red, red soft dorsal, anal,
pelvic fins and tail clear with red tips and edged with white, a short black bar on the
gill opening above the black pectoral fin base and eye with a barely
visible dark bar above. Attains 8 inches. A new
Hawai'i record published by Randall
& Stender in 2002.
