An invasive solitary species common on coral reefs at scuba depths.
Dark brown with many blue spots and a pattern of tan vertical bars which
may be displayed at will. Intentionally
introduced to Hawai'i from Mo'orea in 1956 by State fisheries
managers as a stock-enhancement experiment, the roi has proven to be a
serious threat to native reef fish and culling measures have been
implemented by local divers. Since it feeds upon reef fish it
often causes ciguatera poisoning and should not be eaten. Attains 24 inches.
Red Sea to Japan and Pitcairn, introduced to Hawaii.
