PORKCHOP CORAL
Massive colonies with thick angular plates
are common in shallow water
exposed to surge, while deepwater forms exposed to current tend to be
small encrustations. Pit-like calices have stout star-like ribs
that are shared, pale tan in shallow water, darker with yellow or green
in deep water. Hawai'i,
the Indo-Pacific, and Tropical Eastern Pacific.
All coral
skeletons illustrated are from scientific collections taken prior to
1998.
