Brown booby - Sula leucogaster This booby was choking with a fish he could not swallow. The crew members from our dive boat decided to help and removed the fish from his throat, then let the bird to recover for a little while at the top of the boat. I climbed up and sat down next to him and could make pics and even touch him (her) ...the poor one was really exhausted and indeed he would have died if he would have been left alone. After a while he recovered and flew to the water and swam next to us for a while before leaving. We called him "Chewy" :-) Brown booby,Fall,Geotagged,Indonesia,Sula leucogaster

Appearance

The booby's head and upper body is covered in dark brown or black, with the remainder being a contrasting white. The juvenile form is gray-brown with darkening on the head, wings and tail. While these birds are typically silent, bird watchers have reported occasional sounds similar to grunting or quacking. Their beaks are quite sharp and contain many jagged edges. They have short wings and long, tapered tails.

Brown booby The Youtube video below refers to it as a yellow-footed booby which is a misnomer because there is no species with this name (that I can find), but the video itself is interesting.

Behavior

Brown booby pairs may remain together over several seasons. They perform elaborate greeting rituals, and are also spectacular divers, plunging into the ocean at high speed. They mainly eat small fish or squid which gather in groups near the surface and may catch leaping fish while skimming the surface. Although they are powerful and agile fliers, they are particularly clumsy in takeoffs and landings; they use strong winds and high perches to assist their takeoffs.
Isla Isabela's Brown Boobies Brown boobies are strong seabirds who reside near warm, tropical waters. Their diet consists of fish that they catch or snatch from other birds. They hunt their prey by diving into ocean waters, a beautiful display of their fortitude and grace. The birds may mate for life and males and females care jointly for their young, who require nurturing for 20 or more weeks. Habitat

This species breeds on islands and coasts in the pantropical areas of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. They frequent the breeding grounds of the islands in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. This bird nests in large colonies, laying two chalky blue eggs on the ground in a mound of broken shells and vegetation. It winters at sea over a wider area.
