Stems up to 30 cm, pendulous, dichotomously branched. Foliage leaves narrowly lanceolate-acuminate, up to 3.3 × 0.4 cm, coriaceous. Fertile region of stem distinct. Sporophylls 1.2 × 1.5 mm, oblate, subequal in length to the sporangia.

Huperzia phlegmaria (commonly known as either coarse tassel fern, or common tassel fern) is an epiphytic species of tassel fern native to rainforests in Madagascar, some islands in the Indian Ocean, Asia, Australasia and many Pacific Islands.
