Asplenium australiasicum is a popular fern often seen in Australian gardens.
It has long, leathery, shiny green fronds that grow in a dramatic funnel shape that resembles a birds nest, hence the name.
Each frond can unfurl to become 1.5 metres in length so a fully grown specimen can easily take up 3 metres in diameter of space.
They will grow epiphytically on trees or rocks (lithophytic) and also be happy planted directly in the ground. As such they are well suited to survive well in competition with other plants, especially trees.
Their very distinct and dramatic shape makes them perfect for graphic impact in shady locations and go well with Bromeliads and Begonia and make a big impact if planted in a tub on a large patio.
