Ravenala madagascariensis or the Traveller's Palm has very large paddle-shaped leaves that are carried on long petioles in a highly distinctive fan shape that is aligned in a single plane.
It has large white flowers similar to those of its close relative Strelitzia reginae (the Bird of Paradise plant), but are not so striking having a green bract.
Upon being pollination the flowers produce blue seeds, possibly the only blue seeds in nature.
This plant is widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions for its distinctive and very graphical habit.
As the plant ages it loses the lowest or oldest leaves, revealing a sturdy grey trunk.
