Overview
Canna x generalis or the Canna Lily is a beacon of a plant that has dark green leaves with purple tones in them and fabulous brilliant red or yellow flowers in summer.
It has a base of rhizomes from which grow the leaves, which are furled to make what appears to be a stem.
Canna x generalis prefers a warm climate and are very easy to grow and maintain, being very popular in Australian gardens.
Some types are variegated which are even more spectacular than the single-colour versions.
Soil: Most regular well drained soils are best, though some added organic matter will be appreciated to maintain access to moisture.
Maintenance: Protect rhizomes from cold with lots of mulch - or lift them during winter and store in the warm until spring.
Can be grown in containers in greenhouses.
They like hot, dry weather but need to be watered and fed often.
Diseases: None of note.
Other Species: The variety 'Hungaria' is popular and spectacular with its irridescent red blooms while 'Phasion' has equally spectacular golden blooms.
Comments: Closely related to the ginger and banana plants.
