Dwarf Buddha’s Belly Bamboo
Bambusa Vulgaris Wamin is an interesting looking bamboo known for the pronounced “bulge” above and below each cane’s internode or “waist” that resemble a little “Buddha belly”.
Dwarf Buddha’s Belly Bamboo is originally from South China and can grow to 12-15 feet high with 3″ diameter canes reaching mature size in 3 years. Dwarf Buddha’s Belly is a clumping bamboo which grows with an outwardly spiraling root path. Unlike running bamboo which will redirect itself when its roots meet an obstacle this clumping bamboo is forceful about where it wants to grow and will push its way through obstacles — be sure to plan accordingly as to where you plant it (keep it away from the house or pool).
Bambusa Vulgaris Wamin is a tropical bamboo which means that stems and leaves may be damaged by temperatures below 27 degrees F. This plant does best in full sun to partial shade and requires well drained, but continuously moist soil. In warm, humid areas, such as Florida, this species is much more reliable and consistent in producing swollen internodes (bellies).
