Description
Care
The rarely traded Multicolour Angelfish is a cryptic resident of deep water outer reef slopes where they patrol small but distinctive passageways between areas of rubble underneath rich coral growth. They have been observed as deep as 115 metres below sea level, but are more typically seen between 20 and 90 metres. The aquarium should be as deep as possible and aquascaped with plenty of live rock, preferably stacked as to create plenty of narrow passageways and dark overhangs. A mature set up will ensure plenty of microalgae growth that the fish will enjoy browsing upon. Although in the wild the Multicolour Angelfish is sometimes seen in small harems of up to 7 individuals, in the confines of the aquarium it is highly territorial and really should be the only angelfish present in the tank, unless a mated pair is acquired. If this fish is to do well, ensure that the tank is not heavily stocked with fish and that tankmates are not too aggressive. Although some aquarists have kept Multicolour Angelfish in a reef setting without any trouble, extreme caution is advised in adding this species to such a set up as some individuals will nip at corals and clam mantles. This is less likely to occur if your fish is a juvenile that is being well fed; however, some adults may already have a taste for certain invertebrates. The more spacious the tank, larger the coral colonies, and the better fed the fish (and obviously in such circumstances much attention must be paid to filtration and water quality), the less chance there is of the fish picking on just one or two corals and doing irreparable damage. Very sensitive to copper-based medications. Handle with care "“ angelfish possess sharp cheek spines that can easily become entangled in netting.
Feeding
Should be offered a varied diet that includes plenty of vegetable matter such as Spirulina & marine algae, in addition to meaty fare, for example vitamin/Spirulina-enriched brineshrimp, Mysis shrimp, special sponge-based Angelfish preparations, and finely chopped krill/squid/cockle/mussel. Feed small amounts 3 times per day.
Breeding
This species has not been bred in the home aquarium.
