This variety or Rose of Sharon has been bred to produce few to no seeds, virtually eliminating unwanted seedlings. Coupled with the tidy self-cleaning nature of its blooms (no dead heading!), this selection is much lower maintenance that its forebears. Since it blooms on new wood, pruning can be done in spring as needed without sacrificing summer flowers. Typically it's grown as a rounded, upright shrub. However, it is often sold trained into a tree-form standard which a particularly good choice when growing it in a container.
