This is just another in a growing series of distraction diaries.  They are offered as a brief respite from the struggles of the day and a gentle reminder that we share this planet with all manner of amazing creatures.  I hope you enjoy it.

Haleiwa Sunset

I went night-diving last night for the first time in ages.  It makes for some very challenging photography and these are my first attempts.  At night you see a different range of creatures out on the reef, lots of crustaceans, and the eels are out hunting.

I believe this is a Hawaiian Swimming Crab, Charybdis hawaiiensis. (I just ordered an Invertebrates of Hawaii book and in the meantime I am struggling with my IDs.)

A closer look. It is gripping something in its left claw and tearing off pieces and feeding itself with its right. Not sure what that is.

Bandfin Cardinalfish, Pristiapogon taeniopterus

Yellowhead Moray, Gymnothorax rueppelliae  This eel comes out at night to feed on the reef.

Smile!  It was a very good photographic subject, holding still and posing nicely.  I apppreciated it under the circumstances.

Seven-Eleven Crab, Carpilius maculatus.  The name either has to do with the number of spots on its shell or its habit of hanging out in front of convenience stores asking people to buy it beer.

Here is another. "Gaze into my eyes".

Sea Urchin, and yes this photo is highly processed to give it this look.  I am noodling with the imaging software.

Sleeping Manybar Goatfish, Parapupeneus mulitfaciatus or Moano. At night many fish change color patterns.  This fish is much whiter than you see them during the day.

Slipper Lobster (I do not know the species name).  These are very well camouflaged clawless lobsters related to spiny lobsters. This one was about four inches long. If you look closely you can see its eyes which will help orient your perspective. The tail is at the top left of the photo.

Please feel free to post your photos and as always, be good humans.
