Habitat: larvae associated with dense vegetation in ponds

General appearance: body very large sized, probably up to 48mm long; head pentagonal with dark transverse markings between eyes; labium very elongated (cf. shorter in other Anax spp.), apex of labial palp incurved (cf. squarish outer corner of Anax parthenope), bilobed ligula with median cleft; abdomen with some dark spots; lateral spines on abdominal segments VII - IX, but without dorsal spine
