Determination note

According to the USDA checklist (see the respective link under http://plants.usda.gov/dl_state.html) there are only two species in the wild in Hawaii: Phytolacca octandra and Phytolacca sandwicensis. The plant has usually 8 carpels per fruit and the fruit carpels looks rather connate. So Phytolacca americana can be almost certainly excluded and Phytolacca esculenta is unlikely. Judging from the images on the web, Phytolacca octandra is most likely.
