Cosmopolitan. It is found in the tropical and temperate latitudes of all the great oceans. In Iberian waters its presence is exceptional although strandings of this species have been cited both in the Atlantic waters of the Canary Islands and Portugal as well as in the Mediterranean.
Ocean to the Southeast, East and Southwest of El Hierro, Northeast of La Palma, West, Southwest and South of La Gomera, Northwest, West, Southwest and Northeast of Tenerife, Southwest and Northeast of Gran Canaria, South, Southeast and East of Fuerteventura and South, Southeast and East of Lanzarote.
It is found mostly offshore in deep water, but can approach the coast. In the Canary Islands it has been observed at an average depth of 320 m, and about 4.39 km from the coast. (IUCN, 2015)
