Description

The Red Edge Dracaena is more commonly known as Dracaena marginata, but is now considered a narrow-leaved variety of D. reflexa. This popular, robust houseplant originates from Madagascar and the surrounding islands of the Indian Ocean. The 'Colorama' cultivar is particularly colourful with pink, whitish and green longitudinally striped leaves. Dracaena reflexa var. angustifolia develops over time into a shrub or small tree several metres tall with a slender trunk, but can be kept small by pruning. The ribbon-shaped leaves are about 30 to 40 cm long and 2 cm wide.

This narrow-leaved dragon tree is a robust plant. It grows in any loose soil. The soil should be kept moderately moist and can become a little dry temporarily, but should neither dry out completely nor be waterlogged. Once the plant is established, it can be fed with a houseplant fertiliser. Hydroponics is also possible. The Red edge dragon tree does not need a lot of light, but grows more vigorously in a bright spot without direct sunlight. The temperature should ideally be at least 20 °C and should not fall below 16 °C for long periods. Pruning encourages the formation of side shoots.

Dracaena reflexa var. angustifolia 'Colorama' is a robust plant, especially for higher tropical terrariums, which is particularly striking with its pink, longitudinally striped leaves. As a young plant, it makes a pretty accent at the bottom, and older specimens make striking specimen plants with their tufted leaves on slender stems that thicken towards the bottom.
