EXPERIMENTS ON GREENHOUSE WHITEFLY CONTROL BY THE MIRID BUGS MACROLOPHUS CALIGINOSUS WAGNER AND CYRTOPELTIS TENUIS (REUTER) IN PROTECTED WINTER TOMATO CROPS

Abstract:
In the south of Sardinia (Italy), four-year experiments were carried out in winter protected tomato crops to evaluate the efficiency of the predatory mirid bugs Macrolophus caliginosus Wagn. and Cyrtopeltis tenuis (Reut.) in keeping the greenhouse whitefly Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westw.) under control. 1 - 8 predators per m2 were released in commercial and experimental glasshouses, where minimum temperatures were kept between 5 and 12°C. Autumn releases (1 – 3 predators per m2) and late winter releases (2 - 4 predetors per m2) never allowed any significant control effect before late spring.
Late winter introductions of 6 mirids per m2 had a more rapid impact on the pest.
Better results were achieved when the mirid bug releases were carried out in late summer, or when other whitefly natural enemies (native mirids or released Encarsia formosa Gahan) were established on the crops as well.
