Memoranda Soc. Fauna Flora Fennica 90: 16. 2014 16 • Memoranda Soc. Fauna Flora Fennica 90, 2014 A cosmopolitan spider, Smeringopus pallidus (Blackwall, 1858) (Araneae, Pholcidae), in an aquarium shop in Turku, Finland Seppo Koponen Zoological Museum, University of Turku, FI-20014 Turku, Finland. E-mail: sepkopo@utu.fi A population of the cosmopolitan spider Smeringopus pallidus lived at least for ten years in an aquarium shop in Turku. This originally Afrotropical species is known in Europe only from the Netherlands. Only two species of the daddy-long-leg spiders (Pholcidae), both living indoors, are known in Finland: Pholcus phalangioides (Fuesslin, 1775) and Psilochorus simoni (Berland, 1911) (Koponen & Fritzén 2013). The cosmopolitan Smeringopus pallidus (Blackwall, 1858) lived at least for ten years in an aquarium shop (”Turun Akvaario”) in Turku, Peltola (67109:32418). The spider was found for the first time by Veli-Matti Mukkala and identified by the late Michael I. Saaristo in 1992. V.M. Mukkala told later that in the aquarium shop with a ”tropical” microclimate lived then a wellestablished population of S. pallidus. The following samples from the shop are deposited in the Zoological Museum, University of Turku: 2 males, 8 females, 3 juveniles, 23.04.1992 (leg. V.-M. Mukkala); 1 female, 14.01.1993 (leg. Mika Vahtera); 1 male and 7 females, 11.11.1994 (leg. M.I. Saaristo); 1 female, 7.05.2003; all det. by Saaristo. The aquarium shop with its special microclimate does not exist anymore, and the whole building has been totally renovated. Detailed descriptions and good figures of this rather large and colourful pholcid species have been given by Saaristo (1978, 2010) and by Hu- ber (2012). According to Nentwig et al. (2014), this originally Afrotropical species is hitherto known in Europe only from the Netherlands. Acknowledgements. I wish to thank Dr. Veli-Matti Mukkala for valuable information.
