New Cricket Species from the Fiji Islands (Orthoptera: Grylloidea)
DANIEL OTTE AND GREG COWPER
Department of Entomology, Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19103 otte@ansp.org
ABSTRACT.—This paper reports on a recent biotic survey of the Fiji Islands (Fiji Terrestrial Arthropod Survey) sponsored by the
Schlinger Foundation and the National Science Foundation. A total of 52 new species and 11 new genera of crickets are added to the
previously known 21 species and 16 genera. All of the new taxa are from the four largest islands: Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Taveuni, and
Kadavu. [For data on HOLOTYPES see Postscript on page 218].
KEY WORDS; Fiji crickets, new species, new genera.
INTRODUCTION
SPECIES ACCOUNTS
We report here on new species of crickets (Orthoptera:
Grylloidea) collected mainly by the Fiji Terrestrial Arthropod Survey (http://hbs.bishopmuseum.org/fiji/); a project
supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF grant
DEB-0425790). 73 species of Grylloidea can be reliably
listed for Fiji. Of this number 52 species are new. The fauna
includes 27 genera, of which 11 are new. Three of the four
cricket families are represented (Gryllidae, Mogoplistidae,
and Myrmecophilidae). Gryllotalpidae are not yet known.
Additional species were collected by Otte and Alexander in
1985. Numerous specimens in the Bishop Museum have
not yet been studied. Prior to the present study 21 species
of crickets had been described from Fiji. We have added 52
new species. All of the new species are described from four
large islands: Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Taveuni, and Kadavu.
All of the species collected by the FTAS were collected
using malaise traps. All species collected by Otte and
Alexander were collected by hand with insect nets.

Fijixipha Generic Group
There exists in Fiji a number of genera which share a
unique genitalic character. The genera are: Fijixipha,
Kadavuxipha, Levuxipha, Minutixipha, Nausorixipha,
Savuxipha, Tavukixipha, Vanuaxipha, Veisarixipha,
Vitixipha, and Vudaxipha. In all of these genera the male
epiphallus is extremely small, usually about one quarter the
size of the epiphallus in other Trigonidiinae. This appears
to be unique to Trigonidiinae of Fiji. It is not known in New
Caledonia or Australia or Hawaii. The shape of the
epiphallus is highly variable among genera, and quite consistent within genera. It is on the basis of the epiphallic shape
that the genera are recognized. These are shown in Figures
1a and 1b.
FIJIXIPHA new genus
Type species.—Fijixipha batia new species.
Diagnosis.— This genus can be reliably distinguished
from other Fijian genera only on the basis of the male
epiphallus (see Fig. 1a). The epiphallus possesses two sets
of prominent lobes, two closely spaced posteriorly directed
lobes, and two shorter upward directed lobes. The length
and thickness of the lobes defines the species.

Recognition.—Dark brown with pale legs. Head, face
