Sri Lanka is a biodiversity hotspot, harboring a rich ichthyofaunal diversity consists of 93 indigenous freshwater fishes, of which 53 are considered as endemic (MOE, 2012; Batuwita et al., 2013). The family Gobiidae in Sri Lanka is represented by nine species; Awaous melanocephalus, Glossogobius giuris, Oligolepis acutipennis, Schismatogobius deraniyagalai, Sicyopterus griseus, Sicyopterus halei, Sicyopus jonklaasi, Stenogobius malabaricus and Stiphodon martenstyni where, Stiphodon martenstyni and Sicyopus jonklaasi are endemic (MOE, 2012). There are occasional records of estuarine gobies such as Rhino-horn Goby (Redigobius balteatus) have been reported from lowland freshwater bodies of the country (Pethiyagoda, 1991; De Silva et al., 2015). This short article reports another record of an estuarine goby belonging to the genus Redigobius from the lowland freshwater floodplains of Sri Lanka.

International audienceA new species of Sicyopterus, freshwater goby, is described from Sumatra and Java, Indonesia. It differs from other species belonging to the genus by a combination of characters including two lateral clefts on the crenulated upper lip, a second dorsal fin with one spine and 10 segmented rays, second and third rays of the first dorsal fin filamentous, more lateral, predorsal and transverse back scales, and a reddish caudal fin in male with a slight blue line on the upper and lower parts.

First report of two euryhaline gobiid fishes (Gobiidae Cuvier, 1816) from West Bengal, India2023 •
West Bengal lies in the Northern part of peninsular India and has a rich variety of aquatic ecosystems such as hill streams, ponds, rivers, mangroves, mudflats, estuarine creeks and small riverine channels which holds a large ichthyofaunal diversity of as much as 610 species. The present work reports the first record of two gobiid fish's viz., Aulopareia cyanomos (Bleeker, 1849) and Stigmatogobius yanamensis Rao, 1971 from the Sunderban Biosphere Reserve of West Bengal. Stigmatogobius yanamensis was so far thought to have a limited distribution in the Godavari estuaries in India.

The Ward's sleeper goby, Valenciennea wardii (Playflair, 1867), was previously known from various localities all along the Indo-Pacific Ocean, from Tanzania to Papua New Guinea, including Andaman Islands, Australia, Indonesia, Japan, China, Maldives, Philippines, Seychelles, Sudan, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Zanzibar, Red Sea: Sudan and Western Australia. A single specimen with standard length (SL) of 62.3 mm was collected as trawl bycatch at Mudasalodai, Tamil Nadu, Southeast coast of India, during April-July 2022. This new record of this species extends the distribution to the Indian waters. This goby can be more or less locally common and is more frequent on soft bottom seafloor close to reefs or far from them, especially all along the seagrass-beds on sandy or muddy bottoms.
