Abstract The project was undertaken to assess the reef health, status, fisheries potential, conservation value and biodiversity of two atolls in the Marshall Islands: Rongelap and Bikini. The data produced represent a first comprehensive reference of reef status at national and international level and are used to recommend national marine conservation plans for Rongelap and Bikini. This report focuses on Rongelap Atoll.

Located in the central Pacific Ocean and spanning more than 5,025,000 km2 (1,940,000 mi2), the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) is comprised of 1,225 islands and islets including 29 atolls and five solitary, low coral islands. Only 0.01%, or 181.3 km2, of the country is dry land. The atolls and islands are arranged in two roughly parallel groupings—the eastern Ratak (or Sunrise) Chain containing 15 atolls and two islands, and the Ralik (Sunset) Chain to the west containing 14 atolls and three islands (Figure 12.1).

The reefs of the Marshall Islands are among the most pristine in the Indo-Pacific, having suffered minimal damage from bleaching, destructive fishing techniques, and sedimentation. However, signs of unsustainable resource exploitation are apparent, including the earlier extirpation of the largest giant clams, and the ongoing reduction of reef shark, grouper, and Napoleon wrasse populations. In addition, localized outbreaks of crownof-thorns starfish (COTS) and coral disease, principally on the capital atoll of Majuro, are ongoing.

The first rapid assessment of fish communities in the Abrolhos Marine National Park was undertaken in three offshore chapeirões and at eight sites in the fringing reef off Santa Bárbara Island. Fish communities in the two habitat types differed at both the family and species levels. Total species numbers were higher in the chapeirões (3840/site) than in the fringing reef (13-37/site). Total fish density was higher in the fringing reef than in the chapeirões, as were the densities of most surveyed families, except for pomacentrids, lutjanids and scarids. The most common size class for key herbivores (scarids ≥5 cm, acanthurids) and carnivores (lutjanids, large-sized serranids) was 11-20 cm. Herbivores grazing dead skeletal areas may accidentally damage stony corals, particularly in the chapeirões. Limited impacts from sewage discharge may affect the northern coast of Santa Bárbara Island; tourists or artisanal fishers may have reduced the density of carnivores in this fringing reef.

Marine biodiversity of a pristine coral reef in French Polynesia2021 •
Understanding the natural state of coral reefs is paramount to evaluate the response of these ecosystems to local and global human impacts as well as management and conservation strategies. In French Polynesia, some islands are still pristine or uninhabited, such as Tupai atoll. Tupai has been uninhabited, with access to the lagoon prohibited since 2010. However, fishers from nearby islands often take from the outer reef slope at Tupai. Our marine biodiversity survey (coral, macro-invertebrates, and fish) conducted in 2019 highlighted a low density of commercial fish species and top-predators on the outer slope in comparison to the lagoon, where the top-predators represented 16% (of the density) of functional trophic groups. Our surveys also showed a high living coral cover (46%) on the outer slope of Tupai, perhaps due to the absence of both touristic sub-aquatic activities and local pollution from private and commercial activities. Overall, this initial scientific assessment of Tu...
