Common Name: Star Apple Fruit, also known as Golden leaf tree, Abiaba, Pomme de lait, Estrella, Milk fruit, and Aguay.

Botanical Name: Chrysophyllum Cainito.

General Information: The Star Apple is a tropical tree bearing edible fruits.

The fruits are round and approximately two to four inches in diameter at maturity.

The skin of the fruit is smooth, leathery, and its colour can be either purple to red or yellow to green, depending on the variety.

The green star apple has an aromatic and tropical sweet flavour with nuances of apple, lychee, and persimmon. The fruit is about the size of an apple and has smooth, shiny green skin.

Health Benefits:

Star Apple fruit pulp contains a fair amount of calcium and phosphorus. It is rich in phytochemicals, including ALA antioxidants, which help prevent certain cancers and support a healthy immune system.

It has been used to treat sore throats and reduce inflammation associated with pneumonia and laryngitis. Ground seeds can be used as a tonic and diuretic.

Planting and Care

Should be grown in full sun or partial shade on fertile, well-drained soils, should be mulched beneath the canopy and watered regularly until established, then they can withstand occasional drought.

Special Feature

It has a high Vitamin C content which helps in curing colds and preventing scurvy. It can be used for healing and treatment of wounds such as cuts, sprains etc., especially the leaves, roots and barks as they have healing components.

Star apple trees are great ornamentals as well as fruit producers. Creamy flesh is used while making sweet treats, cooked into compotes or pie fillings.
