Physalis peruviana, commonly called the goldenberry or the Cape gooseberry, is a species of herbaceous plant in the nightshade family of Solanaceae. It is native to Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. P. peruviana is an annual plant in temperate areas and a perennial plant in tropical areas. They can grow to 3 to 5 feet tall at maturity. Similar to its close relatives the tomatillo and the chinese lantern plant, Physalis peruviana produce delicious tart berries encased in a papery sheath. The berries can be eaten fresh or dried, or can be processed into jams, jellies, chutneys, puddings, pies, and smoothies. USDA hardiness zone 8.

Sow the Physalis peruviana seeds on the surface of a well draining potting mix. Sprinkle just enough soil on the surface to cover the seeds. Keep the soil moist, but not soaking wet. Place the seeds in a bright area between 65°F and 75°F for best results. Seeds typically take 2 to 4 weeks to germinate, but can take longer. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
