Description Upright subshrub, 1-3m tall, tender branch densely grown with yellow short soft hairs, with distinct longitudinal ridges. Ternately compound leaf, leaflet papery or thinly leathery, terminal leaf broadly lanceolate to elliptic, 6-20cm long, 2.5-9cm wide, tip gradually pointed, with short tines, basal part round wedge shaped, upper surface nearly hairless, lower surface with yellow soft hairs along the leaf vein, basal vein 3, adnate leaflet comparatively small, oblique, basal vein 2-3; petiole with narrow wings, with short soft hairs. Stipule big, lanceolate. Raceme axillary, flowers plentiful and dense, rachis, both bract and peduncle densely grown with light yellowish short soft hairs, peduncle extremely short; calyx campanulate, calyx teeth 5, lanceolate, one time longer than calyx tube, the most inferior teeth comparatively long, exteriorly with hairs; corolla purplish red, about 1cm long, vexil long elliptic, with short carpophore and 2 ears, ala narrowly elliptic, carina long elliptic, tip slightly curved, basal part with long carpophore and laterally with ear; stamens 10, diadelphous; ovary with gloria. Pod elliptic, about 1.5cm long, brown, with short soft hairs; seed 1-2, spherical, black. Flowering: June to August. Fruiting: July to September.
Distribution Growing on deserted hill-slopes at altitude 450-1,800m or hill streamsides. Distributed in Guangdong, Jiangxi, Hainan, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Fujian, Taiwan and etc. Also distributed in North Korea, Japan and Russia. The medicinal materials are mainly produced in Yunnan, Sichuan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Jiangxi, Fujian and etc.
Part Used Medical part: roots. Chinese name: Dayeqianjinbo.
Harvest & Processing Excavated roots in autumn, wash off earth, and sun-dried.
Chemistry Leaves and flowers contain flemingin C, D, E, F. Bark contains lupeol, α-amyrin, sitosterol, procyanidins and sitosterol glucoside.
Properties & Actions Sweet tasteless, neutral, non-toxic.Dispelling wind-dampness, strengthening sinew-bone and benefiting spleen-kidney.
Indications & Usage Rheumatic ostalgia, psoatic strain, hemiparalysis, impotence, leukorrhea, irregular menstrual periods, poor appetite, foot edema due to deficiency of vital energy.Oral administration: decocting, 10-30g; or made as medicinal liquor. External application: powdered for dusting; or smashed for applying.
Examples 1. Injuries from fall: big leaf flemingia, coral ardisia root, glabrous sarcandra herb 30g each, decoct in water and swallow.
2. Chronic backleg pain: big leaf flemingia, champion's bauhinia, euconmmia 15g each, rehmannia dride rhizome 12g. Decoct in water and swallow.
3. Rheumatic arthritis: big leaf flemingia 30g, shiny-leaved prickly ash 9g. Decoct in water and swallow.
