Description Sub shrub, about 1 meter high; branches plentiful, sprout covered with brown stellate short soft hairs. Leaf alternate, papery, leaf in the lower part of stem broad ovate, 5-8cm long, 2-6cm wide, tip usually 3 lobed, basal part round; leaf in the upper part of stem long circular, with sparse hairs upside, with stellate soft hairs downside, basal vein 3-5, lateral veins directly reaching the tip of lobe, margin with irregular thick sawtooth; petiole 1-5cm long. Cyme axillary in several branches; both common peduncle and anthocaulus extremely short, yellow, margin with hairs; sepal narrow long circular, 5mm long, angulate in the tip; petal shorter than sepal, yellow; stamens 10; ovary with seta. Capsule spherical, not lobed, covered with yellow soft hairs, with hooked spines, spine 2mm long; with 2-6 seeds. Flowering: summer and autumn.
Distribution Distributed in Taiwan, Fujian, Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong, Hong Kong, Hainan, Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou and Sichuan.
Part Used Medical part: roots or whole plant. Chinese name: Huanghuaditaohua.
Harvest & Processing Excavated the roots in winter and early spring before sprouting, washed sediment, sliced, used fresh or sundried. Whole plant can be harvested throughout the year, chopped into segments, used fresh or sundried.
Properties & Actions Taste bitter, little cold in nature.Clearing heat for inducing diuresis, relieving strangury for inducing decomposition of calculi.
Indications & Usage Used for anemopyretic cold, dysentery, urinary tract calculus, sores and furuncles, venomous snake bites.Oral administration: decocting, 15-30g. External application: appropriate amount, fresh leaves smashed for applying.
Examples Common cold with wind-heat: Triumfetta root, spanishneedles herb 30g each, goldensilk grass, bunge pricklyash seed 15g each. Decoct in water and swallow.
