Zingiber zerumbet (L.) Roscoe ex Sm.

  • Distribution: India, Sri Lanka and Malesia
  • Description: Aromatic herbs. Leaves oblong or oblong-lanceolate, base obtuse, apex acuminate, pubescent below. Flowers pale to dark yellow with greenish red margined bracts. Capsule oblong; seeds 2-3 mm across, globose.

  • Habitat: Evergreen forests
  • Flowering & Fruiting: July-November

  • Parts used: Rhizomes
  • Properties & Uses: Rhizome is used for the treatment of cough, asthma, worms, leprosy and other skin diseases. Rhizome is used along with Kaempferia parviflora for the treatment of gastric pain. Ethanolic extract of the aerial parts of the plant possesse wide range of antibacterial and antifungal properties.
