Info

Paddle crabs have a smooth, square carapace with rounded corners, and the legs are flattened and somewhat paddle-like, hence the German name.

The crabs are commonly found in the back mangroves and along the edges, especially near areas where freshwater streams flow.
These crabs are actually freshwater crabs, but the adults must return to the sea to hatch their eggs.
In many Southeast Asian countries, these crabs are collected as food, and the females with eggs (gravid) are particularly sought after, the crustaceans are either pickled in vinegar and/or salt or deep fried.

Varuna yui is often found far from the sea in freshwater, estuaries or even at sea on driftwood, flotsam and recently has become more common in fish ponds.
