Seedling
Cotyledons medium-sized, 15-25 x 8-12 mm, kidney-shaped, indented, glabrous. First leaves rosette-shaped, entire, obovate, long-petiolate, slightly hairy at the margin. The hypocotyl axis is short. Light green seedling with a pungent taste.
Adult plant
Eruca vesicaria is an annual, upright plant with a strong flowering fragrance. Stem branched from the base, reaching 60 cm in length, hispid. The Latin name Eruca comes from that of the caterpillar, referring to its hairy caterpillar-like stem. Thick basal leaves, lyre-pennatifid, with incised-toothed lobes, dark green; pinnatifid cauline leaves. Flowers are white or pale yellow with purple veins, erect sepals, greenish-brown, deciduous, grouped in long terminal racems. Fruit in the form of siliqua, more or less ventral, erect, short, sabre-shaped beak equal to half the valve. Seeds ellipsoid, smooth, in two more or less distinct rows.

Medicinal: The revulsive (sinapism), rubefacient character of Eruca vesicaria is as obvious as its antiscorbutic, depurative, diuretic and stimulant properties. It has been used in particular to treat dropsy and as a stomach tonic. In infusion, at a dose of 15 g per litre of water, the seeds are vomiting.
