Prevention
•
Observe closely during the growing season to prevent the pest outbreak.
•
Avoid closer planting, maintain the spacing 20x20 or 25x15 cm2.
•
Avoid ratooning.
•
Flood and plow field after harvesting if possible.
•
Conserve natural enemies such as Cardiochiles philippinensis, Goniozus spp, Copidosomopsis nacoleiae, Trichomma cnaphalocrocis and Trichogramma spp., predators (spiders) by avoiding the use of broad-spectrum insecticides.
•
Follow crop rotation.
•
Placing perching in rice field after transplanting for nesting insectivorous bird.
Monitoring
•
Use pheromone and light traps to monitor pest incidence.
•
Monitor weekly from mid tillering to flowering for the presence of the insect pest and damage symptoms.
•
Look for symptoms (damaged leaves: larvae roll the leaf longitudinally and feed inside on the green tissues). Longitudinal white streaks appear on rolled leaves.
•
Open rolled leaves to find insect larvae.
•
ETL: 25% leave damaged
Direct Control
•
Install pheromone traps (5/acre from planting).
•
Collection by sweep nets and destruction of moths.Release of Trichogramma chilonis at a rate of 3cc/acre.
•
Application of azadirachtin at 2 ml/lit of water. Add sticking agent at 1 ml per litre of water.
Restrictions
•
When using a pesticide or botanical, always wear protective clothing and follow the instructions on the product label, such as dosage, timing of application, pre-harvest interval, max number of sprays, restricted re-entry interval. Do not empty into drains and water sources.
Direct Control
Spray carbaryl according to product label.
Carbaryl – WHO Class II (Moderately Hazardous).
Spray chlorpyriphos according to product label.
Chlorpyriphos – WHO Class II (Moderately Hazardous).
Spray isoprocarb according to product label.
Isoprocarb – WHO Class II (Moderately hazardous).
