Flowers: dioecious Plant/Animal Interaction: some diptera observed on leaves, evidence of twig borer Substrate: talus slopes with brown granular soil Aspect: 300? north Slope: 30? Closure: open to light ca. 70 % of the day Moisture: mesic Topography: 2nd gulch north of main north falls gulch, just below Manono Ridge Phenology: no flower or fruit, [i guess this is a male tree as there are two other trees adjacent to this one and the female has fruit. Vigor: vigorous with full flush of leaves Frequency: three trees living in this gulch Population Structure: Mature: 11 Immature: 0 Seedling: 0 Population Area: 1 sq kilometer Natural Community: relictual Kaua`i diverse mesic forest with secondary succession of invasive weeds Associates: Metrosideros polymorpha var. glaberrima, Pleomele sandwicensis, Diospyros sandwicensis, Diospyros hillebrandii, Pouteria sandwicensis, Rauvolfia sandwicensis, Santalum freycinetianum var. pyrularium, Psychotria mariniana, Antidesma platyphylla, Pritchardia napaliensis, Bidens sandvicensis subsp. sandvicensis, Lipochaeta connata var. acris, Nesoluma polynesicum, Psydrax odoratum, Boehmeria grandis, Elaeocarpus bifidus, Charpentiera obovata, Hedyotis terminalis, and Musa x paradisiaca, Major Threats: habitat degradation by goats, competition with non-native plant taxa such as Lantana camara, Erigeron karvinskianus, Rubus rosifolius, Kalanchoe pinnata, Psidium guajava, Setaria parviflora, and Andropogon glomeratus, coffee twig borer, and the loss of reproductive vigor as the result of limited numbers of existing individuals. Comments: as the three Flueggea in this gulch appear to have extraordinary resistance to twig borer, it is suggested that this population be used for pollen collection and as an important source of seed.
