Thornley Woods Fungi

Due to recent wet weather  and lack of frost the fungi were fruiting in abundance.

Honey fungus (Armillaria mellea) and white rot were common on tree stumps as were Puffballs (Lycoperdon perlatum) on the woodland floor near the path. We also found hairy Curtain Crust (Stereum hirsutum).  Common Jellyspot (Dacrymyces stillatus) and Small Staghorn (Calocera cornea) decorated  a beech stump, unfortunately the pictures I took were out of focus but they are both vibrant yellow though quite small. Near Birch trees- Birch Bolete (Boletus badeus) occurred and on the trunks, Birch Polypore (Piptoporus betulinus) and Hoof fungus (Fomes fomentarius).

There was a spectacular Beech Tree with at least seven types of fruiting fungi. Smoky Bracket (Bjerkandera adjusta) and Splitgill (plicaturopsis crispa) below.

Porcelain fungus (Oudemansiella mucida) past its glowing best.

Not sure what the brown one is. Could be Purple Stocking Webcap (Cortinarius stillatitus) with Trametes ochracea) a bracket fungus.

At the base  was  Sulphur Tuft and evidence of  Inkcap species (Common or glistening). Mycena oreades – a tiny white bonnet was growing in the mossy sock at the base of the tree.

In the woodland  by the river we discovered  Fly Agaric (Amanita muscaria). My first sighting this year.

The Meadowland had various fungi. showing. The Field Blewit was forming Fairy rings.

Here is the underside -, not as purple as the Wood Blewit.

On the return through the railway cutting we encountered Clouded Funnel (Clitocybe nebularis)  trooping in large rings in the woodland. This strange yellow fungi in the picture below is a mystery. It was growing  on a tree trunk (Hawthorn) and smelt of sweet naphtha.
