Sapodilla tree — Manilkara zapota

The sapodilla tree (Manilkara zapota), also known as the sapote, chicozapote, or nispero, is a beautiful and versatile tree native to southern Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. It is prized for its delicious fruit, its milky latex used in chewing gum, and its strong wood.
The sapodilla tree is an evergreen that can grow up to 60 feet tall with a wide, spreading crown. The leaves are glossy and dark green, and the small, white flowers have a sweet fragrance. The fruit is round or oval-shaped, about 3–4 inches in diameter, and has a brown, rough skin. The flesh is sweet and juicy, with a flavor that has been compared to a combination of pear, banana, and vanilla.

The sapodilla tree is a relatively low-maintenance tree that is well-suited to tropical and subtropical climates. It is tolerant of drought and salt spray, and it can be grown in a variety of soil types. The tree is also relatively pest- and disease-resistant.

The sapodilla fruit is a good source of vitamins A, C, and B6, as well as fiber and potassium. It can be eaten fresh, or it can be used to make juice, smoothies, ice cream, and pies. The latex from the sapodilla tree is the primary ingredient in chicle, the base of chewing gum. The wood is strong and durable, and it is used for a variety of purposes, including construction, furniture making, and toolmaking.
